Baking soda paste works better than degreaser alone if you're dealing with really baked-on gunk - mix it with a bit of water to form a thick paste, slather it on the blades, let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub with an old toothbrush or small stiff brush. I had a fan that hadn't been cleaned in way too long and the combination of the gentle abrasive plus the degreasing action cut through months of buildup without needing to soak forever or use harsh chemicals. The paste also doesn't drip everywhere like liquid degreaser does, which makes the whole job less messy.
soak the fan blades in hot water with degreaser for 15 - 20 minutes before scrubbing, since dried grease won't budge with elbow grease alone. after that, a stiff brush and some dish soap finishes it off pretty quick.
