Building a nativity scene myself - what should I watch out for?

My grandmother used to always set up a huge nativity scene at Christmas, and I'd like to try doing that too. I just don't really know if there are certain rules I should follow. Can I just use any figures I want, or is there a specific tradition to it?

Did your grandma have a particular style she favored - more naturalistic or sometimes on the kitschy side?

The nice thing is: there really aren't such strict rules as you might think! Of course there's the classic nativity scene with the essential figures (Mary, Joseph, the Christ Child, the shepherds, the wise men, animals), but how you arrange them and which additional figures you add is totally up to you. Some people build hyperrealistic scenes, others use colorful ceramic figures in a kitschy style, and still others even mix in modern elements. The main thing is that you love it and it reminds you of what you loved about your grandma's nativity!

What's technically important: make sure the construction is stable so nothing tips over. Think ahead about how much space you have and how many figures you can realistically fit - a nativity scene packed too full gets chaotic fast! You don't need much for the landscape: sand, moss, stones, a few branches for trees, paper or fabric for the sky in the background. And lighting matters! A strategically placed light source makes everything ten times more atmospheric. Start small and see how it goes - you can always add more or rework it each year!
