Does coconut oil actually repair hair or just hydrate it?

I've been using coconut oil for like 6 months because my sister told me it seals split ends and repairs damaged hair. I put it on twice a week, but honestly I don't see much difference. Does anyone know if it actually works or if it's just pure TikTok marketing?

Coconut oil hydrates but doesn't really repair - once your hair is damaged or has split ends, there's nothing that actually "seals" them, you can only prevent it by cutting. What you see with the oil is a temporary illusion because it seals the cuticle and gives it shine, but the internal damage doesn't change. If you've been using it for 6 months without noticing a difference, it's probably because it's hydrating what's already healthy, and split ends are going to need scissors anyway. Some oils work better than others (argan or almond oil tend to give more noticeable results), but in general it's more maintenance than actual repair.

Don't expect it to seal split ends because that's not going to happen - dead hair stays dead no matter how much oil you put in it. What coconut oil does do is hydrate and make your hair shinier while you're using it, but it's just cosmetic, it doesn't actually repair anything. I tried it on my fairly dry hair and the difference disappears the day after I wash it; what I did notice is that it looks better for those two days, that's it. If you want real results, what actually matters is trimming your ends every two months and then you'll see that new hair grows in healthier.

Basically you need to cut your split ends every 6-8 weeks if you want them to go away, because damaged hair doesn't regenerate no matter how much oil you put on it. What coconut oil does do is hydrate and protect the healthy hair you have left, so it's not completely useless, but people confuse "it looks prettier after treatment" with "it's repaired". If you've gone 6 months without seeing real improvement, it's probably just not your thing or your hair doesn't respond well to this type of oil (some hair prefers other products). It's worth trying something else, but heads up: no oil actually seals split ends for real, only scissors do that.

Once hair breaks, no product truly "repairs" it in the sense of gluing it back together, so I agree with what others are saying: only scissors actually fix it. What coconut oil does do is protect what you have left, maintain hydration, and prevent further damage, but if you haven't seen noticeable changes in six months, maybe your hair just doesn't respond well to that type of oil or the amount you're using isn't right for your hair type.

Everyone's basically right, but something's missing from the picture: coconut oil works better as a preventative than as a fix. If you already have split ends, yeah, you need to cut them. But if you use oil regularly on healthy or barely damaged hair, it does help keep it from breaking so fast because it temporarily seals the cuticle. The problem is a lot of people expect it to regenerate what's already wrecked, and that doesn't happen with any oil. After 6 months, if you're not seeing a difference, your hair was probably too damaged for coconut oil to fix on its own - at that point the only solution is a trim.
