I've seen plenty of people take a year off and get in just fine when they reapplied - colleges don't really penalize gaps, especially if you did something meaningful with the time. What matters more is showing growth or a clearer sense of purpose when you apply the next round, so what are you thinking of doing during that year?
Most schools will straight up ask you what you did during your gap year, so the real trap is leaving it blank or saying "I just worked retail and played video games" - colleges want to see you were intentional about it, whether that's travel, volunteering, skill-building, or even honest self-reflection. A gap year itself won't hurt your application; the application itself will ask questions that expose whether you wasted the time or used it deliberately.
