Have you noticed if it might be connected to the growth of online sales? It seems to me that besides presales for regular patrons, now a lot of people are snapping up tickets through apps and websites the moment sales open - just physically faster than before. Plus resellers buy up batches to resell them at a markup later, so even if tickets are technically on sale, half of them go to scalpers instead of actual theatergoers.
From what I can tell, yeah, it definitely got noticeably harder. Tickets for popular premieres sell out faster than they used to, and often they're gone before the official sales even start - because of presales for subscribers, season ticket holders, and club members. Plus there are more people who want to go: people are hitting up theaters more actively, so competition for seats has gone up.
What really helps is theater apps or their newsletters, where they announce sales first. If you subscribe to notifications, at least you'll know right away when tickets drop, and you won't miss the rush. Some theaters also offer season packages where you reserve seats in advance, but that doesn't work for everyone because of the price or scheduling.
Another thing that works is just going to less hyped premieres, which are actually just as interesting - they're just not on everyone's radar. And if you're really set on a specific show, sometimes extra dates pop up once the main rush is over. You just gotta be more on top of tracking the info.
