How do I fix the Windows Update loop that won't finish?

That's super frustrating. before you try anything drastic, can you tell me - when you restart does it go back to the same update or does it seem like its trying different ones? also are you seeing any error codes or just stuck on the loading screen?

in the meantime here's what usually works: try forcing a shutdown by holding the power button for 10-15 seconds, then boot back up. sometimes if you let it sit through one more restart cycle it'll actually complete, i know it sucks. if that doesnt work, try booting into safe mode (mash F8 or Shift+F8 during startup depending on your windows version) and see if the update goes through there. safe mode sometimes bypasses whatever's causing the hang.
