We're planning a small wedding for 60 people, but several acquaintances have already been dropping hints that they'd like to come. How do I let them down without hurting their feelings when we literally don't have the space and our budget is tight? What am I even supposed to say in situations like this?
Are they hinting directly to you or through third parties? :) If it's straight up - better to be honest and straightforward: say you're really sorry, but the wedding is very small, all the spots are already booked and there's just no room. You can add that you'd be happy to invite them, but it's not possible financially or space-wise - people usually get that. The main thing is don't make up excuses like "we haven't sent out invitations yet" - it sounds unconvincing and hurtful.
If the hints are coming through mutual acquaintances, then it's actually easier - tell them through that same person that the wedding is for 60 guests and there's no way to add anyone else. It doesn't create any obligation and comes across as an objective fact, not a personal rejection 👍
