Use a semicolon to connect two independent clauses that are closely related in meaning, or to separate items in a list when those items already contain commas. For example: "I prefer vintage guitars; they have more character than modern ones" or "The open house is scheduled for Saturday, October 12; Sunday, October 13; and Monday, October 14.
