How do immersive theater pieces work?

Immersive theater basically takes you out of the role of passive spectator and puts you inside the story. Instead of sitting and watching a stage, you're walking through different spaces, sometimes interacting with actors, sometimes making choices that change how things unfold. The producers design everything to completely immerse you, with sets that feel real, sounds, smells, all carefully thought out to make you feel like you're actually there living it.
