Our local community theater wants to start recording and streaming performances to reach people who can't attend in person. What equipment do we actually need, and are there legal issues we should know about with streaming live theater?
Most small theaters start with a couple of decent cameras (phones work in a pinch, but a DSLR or mirrorless camera gives better quality), a basic audio setup since theater sound can be tricky to capture, and streaming software like OBS which is free. You'll definitely need permission from everyone involved - actors, directors, rights holders for any music or scripts - since streaming changes the performance from a live local event into a broadcast, which opens up copyright and contract questions that vary depending on what you're performing and whether your scripts allow it.
