How long does a gaming laptop battery last in 2026?

I have a Dell G15 from a couple of years ago and it lasts around 3 hours when gaming, but I see they're releasing new models with bigger batteries. Do they actually last significantly longer now or is it still pretty much the same? I need to know if it's worth upgrading.

What really matters is that you check the exact specs of the new model before deciding, because even though batteries are bigger now, power consumption from gaming has gone up quite a bit too. A modern gaming laptop can give you something like 4-5 hours of normal use, but while gaming you'll probably still be looking at 3-4 hours depending on the game and graphics settings. If your Dell lasts 3 hours while gaming, the improvement would be pretty minimal unless you're specifically looking for a model with an 80+ Wh battery and a more efficient processor, so before upgrading compare the actual specs of the new G15 with your current model.

The best move is to compare actual power consumption (watts) between models, not just battery size in mAh or Wh, because that tells you way more than the big marketing numbers 😅

That said, there are some solid improvements in gaming laptops these days. New processors are more efficient, displays use less power (especially OLED), and manufacturers threw in bigger batteries too. But here's the weird part: games are still just as demanding, so you end up with maybe 4-5 hours at best if you're playing something modern. Not as impressive a jump as it looks on paper.

If your Dell G15 lasts 3 hours, a current model will probably give you 4 or 4.5 hours if you take care of it (low brightness, don't max out graphics). Is it worth swapping out your whole machine for that difference? Depends. If it's already feeling old for other reasons (speed, cracked screen, whatever), go for it. But if it's just about battery, maybe it's better to invest in an external replacement battery for your bag instead 🎮

Don't just go by the capacity numbers in wh, that's true, but don't forget that the new 2026 processors and GPUs are quite a bit more efficient than a couple of years ago, so sometimes you see similar battery capacity and better runtime without needing it to be much larger. That said, if your Dell G15 gives you 3 hours of gaming and you need more battery life, a current model will probably give you 4 or 5 hours under the same conditions, but gaming laptops are still what they are: the battery is never going to be the strong point. It's worth upgrading only if you also need to improve performance or display, not just for the battery alone.
