I'm in 9th grade and I get so much homework every day that I easily spend 2-3 hours on it. My parents think that's too much, but my class teachers say it's normal. Is there some kind of official guideline for how long homework is supposed to take at most?
There actually are guidelines - most federal states follow the rule of thumb that 90 minutes daily is reasonable maximum for 9th grade, some say up to 2 hours. For you, 2 to 3 hours regularly is probably too much, especially if that's happening every day. The problem is: these guidelines are often not binding and it depends on how your school handles it. I'd recommend bringing this up with your parents at the next parent-teacher conference - the teachers should coordinate their homework load so it doesn't get out of hand.
At my place, I see this all the time - kids spend forever on their homework and in the end everyone's frustrated. 2-3 hours daily in 9th grade is actually a lot. There are different recommendations out there: The KMK (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs) has guidelines saying it should be about 1.5 to 2 hours per day in lower secondary school - but that can vary depending on the state. Some states have more concrete requirements, others less so. Your parents aren't entirely off the mark if 2-3 hours regularly becomes the norm.
The problem is often: When teachers give out their homework individually, they don't always coordinate with each other. Then everything just happens to pile up on one day. It helps to bring this up calmly - either with your parents to the homeroom teacher or to the school administration. Some schools also have internal guidelines about what's realistic per day. If it really consistently stays at 2-3 hours, that should be looked into. That's not normal everywhere.
