You don't need to get hung up on buying ready-made garlands and baubles - half of the New Year magic comes from stuff you already have at home. Cut out snowflakes from paper, hang them on strings, make a garland from newspapers or magazines, scatter candles (even regular tea lights) around shelves and tables - it instantly feels festive. If you've got branches from outside, put them in a vase, wrap them with white string, add tinsel or even just tie on paper stars - it looks expensive but costs next to nothing. LED garlands are sold in any hypermarket now for dirt cheap, that's the main thing worth buying, everything else comes from your imagination.

If you have old unnecessary things lying around - jars, bottles, boxes - you can easily turn them into candles, vases, or stands for Christmas ornaments, even just by spray-painting them. Plus, decorations like that will be one-of-a-kind and definitely won't match anyone else's.
