My nitrate readings have been creeping up to around 60 ppm even though I do 25% water changes every week. I've got a 55-gallon community tank with some live plants, but they don't seem to be keeping up. Are there other methods people are using these days besides just doing bigger water changes?
The real nitrate fighters are plants - but you need the heavy hitters, not just decorative stuff. Fast-growing stem plants like ludwigia, rotala, and water sprite actually consume nitrate at a decent rate, way more than slow growers. Some people also swear by adding a refugium section or a separate planted container that they run tank water through, which lets you cram in even more plant biomass without crowding the main display. If you want to skip the plant route, you could test whether your bioload is actually the problem - check if you're overfeeding or if your filter media needs cleaning to reduce the ammonia-to-nitrate pipeline, since that'll at least slow the creep between water changes.
