Is it legal for them to make me work on holidays without compensation?

I've been working at a clothing store for three years, and for the past few months my boss has been forcing us to come in on Sundays and holidays without giving us a single compensatory day off. He says it's mandatory because it's retail. Can he really do this without paying us extra or giving us another day off?
