Cats sleeping 16-20 hours a day is pretty much normal, so yeah that's nothing to worry about. They're just wired that way - it's leftover from their wild ancestors who had to conserve energy between hunts. Domestic cats don't need to hunt for food, but the instinct is still there, so they basically sleep a ton and stay alert for short bursts.
The amount varies depending on the cat though. Younger cats might sleep a bit less and be more playful, while older ones tend to zonk out even more. Kittens are also crazy active and sleep less overall. Indoor cats sleep more than outdoor ones since they've got less stimulation, and sick cats will sleep way more than usual - that's when you might want to check in with a vet if something seems off.
As long as your cat is eating, drinking, and acting normal when they're awake, that massive sleep schedule is just how they roll. If they suddenly start sleeping even more than usual or seem lethargic when they do wake up, that could signal something's wrong, but the baseline 16-20 hours is totally fine.
Twenty hours is on the extreme end, but not unheard of - most healthy cats land somewhere in the 12-18 hour range, so if yours is consistently hitting 20, it might be worth a vet check just to rule out anything like thyroid issues or pain that's making them sleep more than usual.
Most healthy adult cats do sleep anywhere from 12 to 20 hours, so you're not looking at anything alarming - it's just how they're built. I've had mine basically disappear into the same sunny spot on the couch for entire afternoons, and the vet said it was totally fine as long as she had energy when awake and was eating normally. If your cat's at that 20-hour mark but seems alert during playtime and isn't showing other signs like weight changes or lethargy, there's probably nothing to worry about. That said, a sudden shift in sleep habits (like going from 14 hours to 20) or if they seem sluggish when they're actually up would be worth mentioning to a vet, just to rule out anything going on.
