Is it still expected to write thank you notes by hand?

I got married last month and people keep asking if I'm doing handwritten thank you cards or just sending a text. Half my guests gave me cash or Venmo'd me, and honestly I'm exhausted. Is there actually still an expectation to sit down and write these out, or have things finally shifted to where a message or email is acceptable?

Don't go with just a text - that reads as thoughtless even if you're tired. Handwritten notes are still the gold standard for wedding gifts, and most etiquette guides haven't budged on this one. That said, if you're genuinely overwhelmed, a thoughtful email or card you've printed and signed is a reasonable compromise, especially for people who Venmo'd you casually. The effort matters more than the method at this point, so pick what you'll actually finish without burning out, but aim for something more personal than a text message.
