I'm looking to improve my travel photos and I saw a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV at a good price on Marketplace. The seller says it has around 40k shutter count. Is it still a good option or should I just go straight for a mirrorless?
Don't just go by the low price, because those old reflex bodies end up being a headache down the line.
The 5D Mark IV is still a decent camera for travel (40k shots is pretty heavy use but it still has life in it), but if you're starting from scratch with lenses and accessories, you'll end up spending more on the reflex ecosystem than on a newer mirrorless that gives you better autofocus, better stabilization, and more up-to-date tech.
Do you already have Canon lenses or would you be buying everything from scratch? That changes the equation quite a bit.
The 5D Mark IV with 40k shutter count is far from being done for, but what matters is that you verify the condition of the mirror and shutter before closing the deal, because those are the parts that wear the most. If the camera is well maintained and the price is really sweet, it can be a great investment for travel! The real difference with mirrorless is the size and autofocus in video, but for still photos a reflex from that generation still holds its own!
