I've been knitting since last year and I'm not sure whether I should follow free tutorials from YouTubers or buy actual pattern magazines. The YouTubers have been doing this for years, but sometimes I don't quite understand their explanations. What do you all use?
I wouldn't stick to just one source - the combination is what works. YouTube is great for getting a visual explanation, especially if you like the YouTuber's pace, but with complicated patterns a bought magazine often helps more because you can look things up at your own pace without having to rewind. Just watch a few different YouTubers and see who explains it best to you - some are way clearer than others - and then maybe grab a magazine for your favorite project so you have something to reference.
To be honest, I've found that I prefer using YouTube to learn new techniques - for example, when I want to try increases or a specific stitch pattern for the first time, watching someone do it on video just helps me the most. For more complex projects, though, I do go back to purchased patterns because they're usually better organized and I can look things up faster if I have questions, without having to fast-forward through a 20-minute video. Honestly, the best approach would probably be to first check YouTube and see if you like a particular YouTuber's style, and then buy magazines or pattern books when you realize you work better with them - doesn't have to be one or the other 😊
