I'm planning a trip to Europe next month and I've got some old traveler's checks from years ago that I never used. My parents always swore by them, but now everyone just uses their debit card abroad. Debit cards are the way to go now - traveler's checks are basically obsolete and most places won't even accept them anymore. Your bank card gives you better exchange rates than traveler's checks ever did, and you can withdraw cash from ATMs basically everywhere in Europe if you need it. Just make sure you notify your bank before you leave so they don't flag transactions as fraud, and maybe bring a backup card in case one gets lost. A small amount of euros in cash is smart for emergencies or places that don't take cards, but relying on your debit card and ATMs covers you for almost everything.
Bring your debit card as your primary backup, but the real move is hitting up ATMs once you land - that's where you'll get the best rates and actual local cash that shops still prefer. Traveler's checks are pretty much dead at this point; you'd struggle to find places that cash them, and the fees eat into whatever "security" benefit they used to have.
