Studded tires are honestly way more practical in Savoie, especially if you're regularly driving up to higher altitudes where things get slippery fast. Chains are a hassle to put on, you need space and time, whereas studded tires you put on once in October and forget about them. That said, if you're just sticking to low roads in town, regular winter tires might be enough, but as soon as you venture out a bit studded tires really make the difference.

Chains, yeah it's a pain to install, but in Savoie it really depends on how often you're heading out in winter. If you're regularly going up in altitude, studded tires are definitely more comfortable day-to-day, but they wear out faster on dry asphalt and they're noisy. Chains are more flexible if you've only got a few tricky drives a year - you can keep them on hand just in case without relying on them constantly.
