What's the best time to replant damaged grass?
My lawn has some patches where the grass died, probably because of a water leak I had. Is August a good time to try fixing this, or do I need to wait longer?

August isn't the best time, unfortunately! Here in Brazil we're heading into the end of winter/beginning of spring, and it really depends on where you live. If you're in the South, it's still pretty cold at night, which slows down germination. If you're in the Southeast or North, the weather's already warmer, but you're still missing consistent moisture. The ideal thing is really to wait until September or October, when spring properly arrives and the rains come back strong - the grass germinates much faster and the sod takes hold way more easily.
Now, if you want to start preparing from now, you can! Clean those damaged spots well: get rid of all the dead grass, thatch, and debris that left the soil compacted. Turn the soil over there, really loosen it up, because standing water makes everything hard. Add a layer of fertile soil or substrate if your soil quality has dropped a lot because of the damage. Get all that ready for September to arrive, then you plant the grass with everything set.
The advantage of prepping now is that you won't waste time when the good season arrives - you just spread the sod or seed and nature does the rest. If you wait to do it all at once in September, it'll be way more work all at once!
It really depends on where you are, but if you've got heat and humidity over the next few months, you can start right now. The thing is, grass likes to grow during transition seasons, so if you can keep watering consistently to keep the soil moist (without waterlogging it) until September or October, the seeds will take well. One tip that works: before seeding, scrape the dead patch well with a hoe to loosen the compacted soil, then spread some fertilizer or homemade compost, and only then put down the seed. That kills two birds with one stone because it improves the soil structure at the same time it feeds the new grass.
Which region of Brazil are you in? Because the best window really is September and October, when the grass comes out of winter dormancy and starts pulling growth more strongly - it's like its spring. If you're in the South you might still be able to wait another month or two, but if you're in the Southeast or Center-West, starting now with regular watering works fine, just be careful not to oversaturate the area where you had the leak.

The thing is, after you fix the leak, the soil is still pretty waterlogged, and grass planted in wet soil rots easily. Better to let it dry out really well before replanting, and then you can take advantage of September/October when the grass is coming out of dormancy.
