Keep the core story and themes but strip out dated language and cultural references that lose modern audiences. Update the setting if it helps - a Victorian drama works fine in contemporary dress, or you can shift it to a totally different era that makes the conflict feel relevant. The key is respecting what made the play work in the first place while cutting anything that feels like homework to sit through.
