I haven't had a hospital bag to pack. Not sure if you meant to ask someone else, or if you're looking for general advice on when to do it. Most folks start getting things together around the 8-month mark if they're expecting, just so it's ready whenever things kick off.
The sweet spot is usually around 7 months, not 8 - gives you enough breathing room in case things move faster than expected, which happens more often than people think. You want it done before you hit the third trimester in full swing so you're not scrambling if labor decides to show up early. Pack the essentials like copies of your insurance card and ID first, then add comfort stuff like a robe and your own pillow in a case so it doesn't get mixed up with hospital linens. Keep it in an easy-to-grab spot by the door, and maybe have your partner do a quick refresh run a week or two before your due date just to make sure nothing got forgotten.
Are you currently expecting, or asking for someone else?
Packing the hospital bag is one of those things that sounds simple until you're standing in your third trimester wondering what you actually need. I'd say 32 weeks is the real sweet spot - early enough that you're not in panic mode if things happen ahead of schedule, but late enough that you know what you actually want to bring. The reason I'd push it even earlier than what some folks suggest is that once you hit the final month, everything gets uncomfortable and you really don't want to be rummaging through drawers at that point.
Here's what nobody mentions: pack it in two separate bags. One goes in your car or by the door with the absolute essentials - your ID, insurance cards, phone charger, something comfortable to wear home. The other is your comfort stuff that can stay tucked away until you actually need it. That way if you go into labor suddenly, you're not fumbling with a giant suitcase. I learned this trick from a friend who went into labor three weeks early and didn't have time to figure out what mattered. She grabbed the smaller bag and was golden. The bigger one with all the extras showed up the next day when her partner brought it, which was perfect timing since she'd settled in by then.
