I want to do a little van trip this summer with my girlfriend, but I find official campsites too expensive. We're looking for nice spots where we can pitch our tent discreetly without getting chased off by the cops. Any tips?
I tested a few spots in a van last summer, and honestly Switzerland is a pain for wild camping - landowners are really vigilant and the fines are steep. Your best bet is to ask permission directly from farmers or owners, like you pull up, say hello and explain you're just looking for a spot for the night; a lot of them will say yes if you're respectful. Otherwise check out the small mountain campsites, sometimes cheaper than you'd think, or van service areas which are legal and not sketchy. Really avoid trying to hide out somewhere, it's not worth it in that country.
