I've traveled a lot and was constantly annoyed by the time changes whenever I moved from one zone to the next! That's when you really notice how practical but also necessary this division is. Reason number one: the sun doesn't reach its highest point at the same time everywhere on Earth. When it's noon at 12 o'clock where you are, it's already the middle of the night in Japan at the same time. It just makes sense that people set their clocks according to the local sun position, otherwise you'd have completely absurd times somewhere - going to work at 8 p.m. in the morning because the "official" time says so!
But time zones are also a historical product. Back in the day, every city had its own time, which caused total chaos with railroad traffic! That's why people agreed on a system: the Earth is divided into strips, and each strip uses the same time. But these strips didn't always run in straight lines - countries often adapted them to their borders so they wouldn't be cut right through the middle. Some countries have also deliberately chosen different times to align more closely with an economic partner or for political reasons.
Today we just need the system so global trade, air traffic, and communication work! Without uniform time zones it would be a nightmare - everyone would constantly have to convert, and there'd be tons of misunderstandings. That's why we stick with it, even if it's annoying sometimes!
