The range estimate is basically your car doing math in real time, and it shifts because conditions change constantly. I've watched this happen on longer drives - punch the accelerator on a highway, and you'll see the number drop noticeably. Let off the gas going downhill, and it climbs back up. The system learns your driving pattern over the last few miles and projects forward, factoring in ambient temperature, elevation changes, cabin heating or AC draw, and how aggressively you're using the motor. Cold weather tanks the range estimate hard because the battery itself gets sluggish and cabin climate control sucks serious power.
The practical thing most people miss: your estimate stabilizes after about 15-20 miles of consistent driving. If you're obsessively checking it during the first few minutes after starting up, you're watching noise. The car doesn't have enough data yet to settle on a reliable number. Once you've got a solid stretch of normal driving behind you, the estimate becomes much less jumpy and actually useful for trip planning. Also worth knowing - if you precondition the battery (warm it up while still plugged in), the estimate often becomes more optimistic because the system knows the cells are already at a decent temperature, which helps efficiency.
don't assume it's a glitch - that estimate recalculates constantly based on your actual driving style, terrain, speed, weather, and battery temperature, so it'll shift up when you ease off the pedal and drop when you hit the highway or climb hills.
