I've had a pair of Soundcore Liberty 4 earbuds for a couple of months now, and I've noticed that after using them for a couple of hours straight, the battery gets pretty hot in the back area. Is it normal for this to happen or do I have something defective? I'm worried the battery might get damaged over time.
Some heat in your earbuds after several hours of use is pretty normal, especially if you've got the volume at medium-high or you're in a warm area. Lithium batteries generate natural heat when they're in continuous use, and electronic components (amplifiers, processors) also give off temperature. The back area is typically where the battery goes, so it makes sense that you'd feel the heat there.
That said, there's a limit. If the earbud is so hot you can't touch it comfortably or if it's way above body temperature, then yeah, there could be a problem. What I'd do is monitor a couple of things: first, turn the volume down a bit and see if the heat decreases. Second, let your earbuds rest between use sessions - don't keep them charging constantly. If after some time of moderate use you keep noticing excessive heat, it's probably a manufacturing defect and you should contact Soundcore's technical support to have them check it out.
As for battery wear over time, heat does accelerate the degradation of lithium cells, but if your earbuds heat up within normal ranges (a bit warmer than ambient temperature, but not burning), the long-term impact is minimal. The key is not leaving them in very hot spaces and not charging them all day.
If the heat is moderate and goes away when you let the earbuds rest, no worries - lithium batteries generate heat with sustained use and that's completely normal. What you should watch out for is if it gets uncomfortably hot (like you can't touch the back), if the battery starts lasting less than it did at first, or if you notice it heating up even on standby; those would be signs that something's wrong and you should check your warranty.
