Why is gold going up right now and what does the Fed thing have to do with it?

Gold prices are rising and something about the Fed raising rates. I don't really understand how interest rates affect gold prices. Should I be thinking about investing in gold or is this just a normal market thing?

Gold tends to move inversely to interest rates because when the Fed raises rates, bonds and savings accounts become more attractive since they actually pay you decent returns, which makes gold less appealing by comparison - but the relationship also depends on inflation expectations, currency strength, and whether people are spooked about the economy overall. Right now you're probably seeing gold up because even though rates might be higher, investors are worried about inflation staying sticky or other economic concerns, so they're hedging their bets with a safe-haven asset. Whether you should invest really depends on your overall portfolio and risk tolerance rather than just chasing whatever's moving at the moment - if you're diversified and have emergency savings sorted, a small gold position might make sense, but it's not something to go all-in on just because the price is climbing.

Are you actually thinking of buying, or just curious about the mechanics? The inverse relationship with rates is real - when the Fed hikes, newly attractive bonds and savings accounts pull money away from gold since gold doesn't pay interest. But there's a flip side: gold also acts as a hedge against inflation and currency weakness, so sometimes it rises even when rates climb if folks get worried about the economy or the dollar tanking. As for investing, that depends on your timeline and risk tolerance - it's not a get-rich move, more of a portfolio stabilizer if you're thinking long term.
