Am I doing the right thing if I don't reply to chat messages right away?

I read a lot about healthy boundaries and the right to disconnect, but when I don't reply to a message in Telegram or WhatsApp for like 8-10 hours, my friends think I'm upset or that something's wrong with me. Do I need to explain that I'm just not checking my phone and that it's normal, or does that count as rude in 2026?

Don't torture yourself with guilt or immediately explain every moment of silence - that'll only reinforce your friends' habit of expecting replies within minutes. Better to calmly write something like "I often don't check my phone for hours, that's normal and doesn't mean I'm upset," and then just stick to your own rhythm. People who respect you will quickly get used to this and stop worrying. And if someone regularly makes a scene over delayed responses, that's their boundary issue, not yours.

Do you have a status in your chats or some way to show that you're online? Because the problem might not be the delayed response itself, but that your friends can see you're in the app but ignoring them. If you're just not touching your phone for hours - that's actually totally normal, and any reasonable person understands that. But if they're still worried, maybe instead of explaining every bit of silence, you should just show through your behavior that you're reliable - you respond sometime during the day, but you don't jump on every urgent notification. Usually after a couple weeks of that kind of rhythm, people adapt and stop panicking.

Лариса asker I don't put on any status, I just leave my phone in another room. Thanks, I'll do that - show through consistency that everything's fine.
