Are tablets useful in primary school or just marketing hype?

My daughter's school just equipped all the kids with iPads in 5th grade. They say it's to "modernize learning" but I get the feeling she's just watching videos. Is it really beneficial for learning or is it just a trend?

You really gotta see how it's actually used in class because a tablet is just a tool, right? It can be super useful for interactive exercises or research, or totally useless if it's just for passive video watching. Did you actually ask the teacher how she uses it during lessons?
