I've been playing chess for about a year, and my rating is up to 1200 on Chess.com. Right now I'm mostly self-teaching through an app - studying openings, solving puzzles. Some people say that without a live coach I'll develop bad habits. Does it make sense to look for a coach, or are apps enough for intermediate level?
Apps are totally enough to keep growing up to around 1500-1800, especially if you're already solid on openings and doing puzzles - that's the right way to go. A coach will really come in handy when you hit a plateau and can't figure out why you keep making the same mistakes, or if you want to seriously push past that. At your stage though, the main thing is to play more tournament games and analyze your own games - that'll give you way more than a one-hour lesson with a coach once a month.
