Are those at-home teeth whitening kits safe for sensitive teeth?

I've got pretty sensitive teeth, especially around the gum line, and I'm thinking about trying one of those whitening trays you get on Amazon. I see tons of brands like Smile Direct and Crest Whitening strips everywhere. Will using them make my sensitivity worse, or are there products designed for people like me?

The real trap with sensitive teeth is that people think they can just tough it out for a few weeks and the sensitivity will fade once whitening stops - it often doesn't, and you might end up stuck with permanent heightened sensitivity. If you're going this route, look for kits specifically labeled for sensitive teeth (lower peroxide concentrations, usually) and honestly consider doing a patch test on one tooth first. Even better, use a desensitizing toothpaste for a couple weeks before you start, and maybe chat with a dentist about whether your sensitivity is from receding gums or enamel wear - those situations need different approaches, and some bleaching methods will make them worse regardless of the product.

Most at-home whitening kits can absolutely make sensitivity worse, especially if your teeth are already touchy around the gum line - the bleach can irritate exposed dentin pretty easily. That said, there are gentler options made specifically for sensitive teeth, usually with lower peroxide concentrations or added desensitizing ingredients like potassium nitrate. Before you grab anything, it's worth chatting with your dentist about which product would be safest for your situation, or asking if they can do a professional whitening that's actually gentler because they control the strength and application. I had a friend whose sensitivity got so bad after using strips that she couldn't drink cold water for weeks, so it's definitely not worth skipping that conversation.
