Most series that feel like filler actually had solid planning - it's more about matching the right series to your reading style than avoiding bloat entirely. For tight pacing, have you looked at things like *The Poppy War* trilogy or *Gideon the Ninth* series? Both wrapped up their main arcs without stretching things out, and there's plenty of newer stuff in that vein if you want more recent releases - what kind of genres pull you in most?
