Can a store refuse to refund me if I lost the receipt?

I bought a toaster at Best Buy about 2 weeks ago and it stopped working. I can't find the receipt anywhere, but I have the box and the product is still in great condition. The manager said they won't process a return without proof of purchase. Is this legal?

Stores can legally require a receipt for returns in most cases - it's pretty standard policy. That said, Best Buy specifically is usually pretty lenient about this stuff, especially if the item is clearly defective and you're within their return window. I'd try asking to speak with a different manager or calling customer service, since two weeks is definitely within their normal return period. You could also check if the toaster was on a credit card you used - sometimes they can look it up that way or at least verify you bought it there.

Most stores can legally require a receipt for returns, though some will look up your purchase in their system if you used a credit/debit card or loyalty program - Best Buy specifically does this pretty often, so it's worth asking them to search by your payment method before giving up. If that doesn't work, you might be stuck since they're within their rights to set that policy.
