Can I install a whole house water filter myself or do I need a plumber?

I've got hard water and mineral buildup in my shower heads, and I'm tired of replacing them every few months. Been looking at installing a whole house filter system, but the quotes from plumbers are crazy expensive. Is this something a DIYer with basic plumbing knowledge can handle, or are there things that'll go wrong if I mess it up?

Don't just assume any plumber quote is overpriced without checking what's actually included - some systems need permits, proper backflow prevention, or upgrades to your incoming line that genuinely cost money. That said, if you've got basic plumbing skills and your setup is straightforward (no weird angles, accessible main line), installing a standard whole house filter is totally doable - it's usually just shutting off water, cutting pipe, screwing in fittings, and turning it back on. The real gotcha is if your water pressure drops afterward, you've got a leak, or the system isn't sized right for your flow rate, so double-check the specs match your house before you start, and don't skip the sediment pre-filter or you'll clog the main cartridge in months.
