You can encounter wolves in the central regions, but it's a rare thing. They live in more northern and eastern areas, though sometimes they venture further south looking for food, especially during harsh winters or when their main territory becomes less appealing. In recent years the wolf population has been recovering somehow, so the chances of running into one are higher than they were a couple of decades ago.
If you're on tourist hikes in the central regions, you almost definitely won't run into wolves - they're really afraid of humans and try to keep their distance. Dangerous encounters are incredibly rare. But fresh tracks in the snow or rumors from locals about wolves appearing in the area - that's more realistic, especially in winter.
What specific region in the central areas are you interested in? Wolf sightings really depend on how close the territory is to the forest-steppe zone and what the terrain is like there. For example, you see them more often in Lipetsk Oblast than, say, around Moscow.

Highways and forests - that's what you need to keep in mind if you drive through central regions often. On our marketplace I talk with sellers from different areas, and recently one of them who lives near Ryazan was telling me that wolves actually do sometimes show up in his area in winter when they're starving. You rarely get to encounter them, but there's a chance, especially if you're traveling around the outskirts or through forests in the cold season.
