Can you renew a foreign passport ahead of time?

Are you planning to go somewhere? You can, of course, submit documents to renew your passport before the current one expires - the law doesn't prohibit it. Though they'll only issue the new passport after the old one expires or you turn it in, so there's usually no point in rushing unless you're planning to go somewhere soon that requires a visa with a long validity period.

I managed to renew my passport six months before it expired and honestly don't regret it at all. The main thing to remember is they'll only give you the new one after they have the old one in their hands, so you'll be without documents for like three or four days. If you're flying a lot in 2026, better do it ahead of time, like before summer season when there are fewer queues. But if you suddenly need to go somewhere urgently, then yeah, that's a bummer - you'll have to wait.
