I live in Moscow and sometimes head out of the city. I've heard that you can't see the Milky Way in the city because of light pollution, but outside the city you can even photograph it. Is that true, and how far do I need to go to get a good view of it?
From Moscow, the Milky Way is practically invisible to the naked eye - the city's light pollution completely blocks it. You need to get at least 100-150 km away from the city, ideally heading north or northeast, where the night sky is actually dark; even 30-50 km outside the city will be better, but you'll only see the full band of the Milky Way in places with minimal light pollution.
