The crazy part is figuring out how they got ejected in the first place - basically when you've got multiple planets in a system, gravitational interactions can get messy and literally yeet one of them out into the void. What's wild to me is that we're only detecting these now because of better infrared telescopes that can spot the heat they're still radiating from their formation, since they're not getting any energy from a star. Some estimates suggest there could be way more of these rogue planets drifting around than actual planets orbiting stars, which honestly makes you realize how chaotic planetary systems can be.
So astronomers keep finding these free-floating planets that somehow got ejected from their solar systems, so they're just drifting thru space on their own without orbiting anything. pretty wild that they can still detect them even tho theyre so dark and far away
