Do I need permits from the municipality to install solar panels on my house, or can I do it without them?

I'm thinking about putting solar panels on my house roof on the outskirts of the city. My neighbor already has them installed for about a year and apparently didn't have to go through any paperwork. Is it really necessary to ask the municipality for permission, or can I do it on my own? What would the consequences be if I don't?

Even if your neighbor didn't get permits, that doesn't mean it's legal; requirements vary by municipality and province, but most require building and grid connection permits, and if you don't get them you can be fined or forced to uninstall everything. The safe thing is to check directly with your local municipality or a professional installer who knows the local regulations, because going without paperwork is a mess that's not worth it.
