If you decide to come without a booking, at least call a day or two before arrival and check if there are rooms available - that way you'll reduce the risk and won't have to scramble looking for a place once you get there. In popular spots during summer or holidays it's almost impossible to book on the spot, but in the off-season or remote villages there are often plenty of free rooms even without advance booking.

My advice: if you're at all unsure about your plans - book through an app (you can pick one with free cancellation), it takes two minutes, and the peace of mind is worth it. Then if you change your mind, canceling won't upset anyone.

It really depends on the season and how popular the place is. If you're planning to come during peak season or to a big city on a weekend, showing up without a reservation is risky - you could end up with nowhere to stay. I tried doing that once with my kid, thinking I'd just find something when I got there, and ended up driving around the city for half an hour looking for any available room. It's stressful, expensive, and uncomfortable.

It's better to book in advance through sites like Booking or other booking platforms - you can see what's available right away, compare prices and reviews. There are often discounts for early bookings, plus you know for sure that a room is waiting for you. If your plans might change, pick an option with free cancellation.

If you're heading to a small town or a seaside village outside of peak season, you can take a chance and look around when you arrive - it's quite possible to negotiate directly with the owner and even get a better price. But that's more of an exception than the rule.
