How do I know if a hotel has decent wifi before booking?

What I always do is go into Google Maps and read recent customer reviews, because people complain a lot when the wifi is trash. I also check out the photos other guests upload, sometimes you can see the router or if they have decent signal in the rooms. If it's a halfway decent hotel, they usually have their website where they specify the speed or if they offer premium wifi, and if you can't find any of that, well that's already a bad sign, literally. Another option is to send a direct email to reception asking what speed they have, because if they don't answer you or give you the runaround, then you already know it's not their priority.

What I do is straight up check reviews on Google Maps or TripAdvisor, because people always complain if the wifi sucks. Most users specifically comment on internet speed, so if you see several people saying it was slow or kept cutting out, well then you know it's not trustworthy. I also look at recent comments, because a year ago could've been different from now in 2026.

Another thing I do is go directly to the hotel's website or contact them by email/WhatsApp before booking. I ask them if they have fiber optic or what kind of connection they use, and also if the wifi reaches all the rooms well or just certain areas. Some hotels straight up tell you the download speed they offer, though most give you vague answers like "we have quality wifi". If you see they don't want to answer or they say something like "it's enough for basic stuff", well then you know it's probably slow.

And if it's important for you because you work or need to play online without lag, don't just trust what they say. Ask on forums or Reddit about that specific hotel, because there's people who share pretty detailed experiences. I personally always prioritize hotels that explicitly mention fiber or high-speed connection, because then you get there and the wifi goes at like 2mbps and they screw you over.
