Do universities care if I took my SAT/ACT multiple times?

I'm applying to schools this fall and I've taken the SAT three times over the past year. My first score was 1320, second was 1410, and I just got a 1510 last month. Will admissions officers see all my scores and think I'm not naturally smart, or do they just look at the highest one? I'm worried it might hurt my chances even though I improved.

Most colleges use "superscoring," where they take your highest section scores across all attempts, so they're really just looking at 1510 in your case. Admissions officers see all your scores, yeah, but they understand that retaking tests is normal and expected - it's not a red flag at all. Your upward trajectory actually works in your favor because it shows you're willing to put in effort and improve. Just send in your best combined score and don't worry about it.

Colleges see all your attempts, but they're not going to penalize you for retaking. The improvement from 1320 to 1510 actually tells a good story - it shows persistence and that you responded well to feedback. Admissions folks understand that standardized tests aren't a perfect snapshot of intelligence on day one.

As others mentioned, many schools use superscoring anyway, so they're essentially combining your best sections across attempts. Even schools that don't officially superscore will typically focus on that 1510 when evaluating you. The narrative of improvement matters way more than the number of tries. If anything, retaking once or twice shows you're serious about doing well, not that you're struggling with the material. You're fine - that final score is solid, and your upward trajectory is actually a plus.

Your worry about looking "not naturally smart" is backwards - schools see improvement as a sign you're willing to put in work, and that 1510 is what they care about. Plenty of people take it multiple times, it's totally normal, and while admissions folks do see all your scores, they're focused on that highest one, especially if the school does superscoring like most do.

Taking it three times is totally normal and won't hurt you - if anything, that upward trajectory from 1320 to 1510 shows you're coachable and committed to improvement, which admissions folks actually respect. Schools aren't looking for people who got it perfect on the first try; they're looking at where you ended up, and 1510 is solid. You're in good shape.
