I'm currently writing job applications and I'm wondering whether I should still make a cover page with my photo and personal information. My mother thinks that's how it's supposed to be done, but I'm not sure if that's still standard today or if it comes across as outdated.
Depends on what you're applying for - at larger companies and in classic office jobs, a cover page has pretty much become a rarity these days, a lot of recruiters just scroll through quickly and want to get straight to the CV. But at smaller firms or in more hands-on fields, it doesn't hurt and can actually score points because it shows you put in the effort. I'd say just send a quick email to the contact person beforehand or check their website to see if they say anything about their preferred application format - that way you're on the safe side and don't come across as unprepared.
I'd be skeptical about it and check first what the job posting actually asks for - some employers have clear requirements in the ad, and you should follow those. If nothing's explicitly required, then skip the cover sheet, it honestly comes across as bloated rather than professional these days. Your photo and the key info belong on your CV anyway, and recruiters just want to get down to business. Your mom probably remembers it from back in the day - it used to be standard, but that's long since outdated.
