Dog food transition - how long does it take to switch over?

Andreas Muller DE 🔍 Enthusiast 👁 75 ⚑ Report Dogs

My Golden Retriever has been eating the same Frolic food for years, and I want to switch to something better now. How long should I mix the old and new food so he doesn't get an upset stomach? Should I just switch right away or gradually transition over two weeks?

Most dogs need about 7-10 days to switch over, some take two weeks - it depends on how sensitive their stomach is. Just switching right away isn't a good idea because their digestive system needs time to adjust to the new food. Golden Retrievers tend to have tougher stomachs than some other breeds, but you should still take it slow.

Here's how I'd do it: In the first week, mix about 75% old food with 25% new. After 2-3 days, bump up the new food to 50/50, then 2-3 days later go to 75% new and 25% old. By the end of the week you can switch over completely. Just watch his stool - if it stays normal and he's eating enthusiastically, you can speed up the process if you need to.

If your dog reacts really sensitively or the new food costs you a lot more, you can also start by testing small amounts. Some people take their time and stretch it out over two weeks, but three to ten days is usually plenty. And hey - if the new food really is better, you'll see it in his energy and his coat.

With a Golden Retriever, I'd expect closer to two or three weeks - the breed often has a more sensitive stomach than average, and slower really is better than faster here. Start with 75% old food to 25% new, bump it up to 50/50 after about a week, then after two weeks go to 25% old and 75% new, before you switch over completely - that way you're playing it safe.

Start with a lot of the old food and just mix in a small amount of new food - that way your Golden won't really notice and his stomach stays happy 😊 I'd increase the amount of new food every second or third day instead of every day. A handy tip: write down when you switch and how your dog reacts - then you'll know exactly how fast you can go next time. If he's sensitive, two weeks isn't too long, but often it works fine in a week if you take it slow.

Switching over right away is really not a good idea - your dog will thank you with diarrhea 😅 My tip: write down the exact mixture for each day (e.g. day 1: 90% old / 10% new, day 2: 80% / 20%, etc.), that way you won't lose track and won't make jumps that are too big. Between a week and a half to two weeks is realistic, and if your dog's stomach acts up in the meantime, just stick with the current mixture for a day or two instead of moving forward.

Have you already tried asking your vet which brand he specifically recommends? He can also tell you whether your Golden really has a particularly sensitive stomach. Generally, I'd definitely plan for at least one to one and a half weeks - switching over all at once almost always causes problems. My approach would be to start the first week with maybe 80% old food and 20% new food, then gradually increase the proportion of new food step by step until after about ten to fourteen days only the new food is in the bowl.

Andreas Muller asker No, I didn't do that. The vet just said it should be better food. Thanks for the concrete instructions with the percentages.

It's important that you watch closely during the transition to see how his stool looks - if it gets too soft, just go slower and stick with the same mix for a few days before you add more new food. Some dogs just need longer, and that's totally fine, better an extra week than dealing with diarrhea drama. Also a good idea: if you notice that a particular food just doesn't work for him, skip switching to a different one and try another brand instead - not every "better" food is right for every dog.
