Dream that predicted something that actually happened later

Last week I had this really vivid dream that my cousin was going to call me to tell me some important news. The next day he actually called with the exact same news I'd seen in the dream. It was way too weird to be a coincidence. Have you guys ever experienced something like this or are we just imagining connections?

This happens with us more often than it seems, but our brain is kind of a trickster about it. Like, you easily forget the 99 random dreams you had and only remember the ones that "matched" reality, you know? It happened to me once where I dreamed that a friend was going to show up without warning, and the next day he was actually there - but then I remembered that he always showed up like that without notice, so it was less of a prediction and more my subconscious picking up on a pattern that already existed.

you can't really confirm it was a premonition though, because we tend to remember the dreams that "came true" and forget the thousands that make no sense at all - it's a pretty common bias. but here's the thing: before that dream, were you already expecting your cousin to call soon? like, does he usually call with important news regularly, or was it completely out of the blue? because if there was something in the back of your mind suggesting that, your subconscious might have put the pieces together without you consciously realizing it.

The risk is that you start looking for patterns where none exist and keep checking your phone waiting for the next "warning from your subconscious". Like, after a coincidence like that, we become more alert to dreams and completely forget about the nights when we dream pure nonsense.

The thing is really this: your brain has tons of information about your cousin - how he thinks, what he usually does, what kind of news he tends to share - and while you're asleep, all of that is there moving around. Sometimes something comes out that makes sense. If you'd had a dream about some other completely random news, you'd probably have already forgotten it. Coincidence is something that happens all the time, we just only pay attention when it matches reality.

Doesn't mean it was anything supernatural or telepathy. It's just your brain doing what it does best - putting bits of information together and drawing conclusions, sometimes getting it right with your eyes closed.

The weirdest part about it is that you're comparing one specific dream to one specific event, but really your brain knows your cousin, knows he calls from time to time, probably already heard about important stuff going on in his life. so it's not like predicting something impossible, it's more your unconscious putting together clues you already had and creating a plausible scenario. it happens way more often than we expect because we're surrounded by information we don't consciously process.

the real problem is when you start putting too much weight on these coincidences and change your behavior because of them. like, you start waiting for "warnings" from your subconscious, you wake up from the dream and you're already anticipating the phone call, and then when it comes it seems prophetic when really you were just more paying attention to it happening. your brain loves confirming what it thinks it already knows.

the thing is: accept that it was interesting, but don't build expectations around it. it's not worth spending time monitoring your dreams looking for patterns, because you're always gonna find some that "match" just because of how many dreams we have in a week. coincidences that make noise are always more memorable than the thousand other things that didn't lead to anything.

your brain probably already had clues about that news without you consciously realizing it! like maybe your cousin gave off signals beforehand (different way of speaking, stuff he was bringing up), and while you were sleeping your subconscious put the pieces together and created a "warning" that seemed supernatural but was really just information processing. here's something practical: from now on whenever you have a dream that seems kinda prophetic, write it down on your phone the same day - don't put it off to remember later! that way you're being honest with yourself about how many dreams actually "come true" versus how many you just forget. most people when they do this find out that the hit rate is way lower than they thought!
