I read that every twentieth Russian wants to go on vacation with their mother-in-law. Is this some kind of joke or do people actually think that? Maybe it's a new travel trend?
I think this is more likely the result of a sociological survey where the question phrasing could have been neutral, like "would you be willing to travel with your spouse's relatives," rather than some conscious trend. Five percent is a pretty small share to talk about a trend, it's more just people who are comfortable with their mother-in-law and don't see a problem with taking a vacation together.
This is probably data from some marketing research or travel agency survey that you should take with a grain of salt :) I agree that the question wording there could've been totally different - like "are you considering trips with your extended family" or people were just being polite and didn't want to offend the researchers. It's probably not a real trend, more like some eye-catching stats for the news that sounds funnier than what's actually going on.
