I read it a few years ago and genuinely thought it was good, but I agree with what people said before - it's heavy, really heavy. The story itself (narrated by Death, set in Nazi Germany) is engaging, but the tone is melancholic from start to finish. If you're the type who likes to fully immerse yourself in an atmosphere and doesn't mind reading that leaves a certain weight on you, I'd recommend it. Now, if you're short on time and looking for something that leaves you feeling upbeat at the end, it might not be the best choice.

My practical advice: before you buy the physical book, grab a sample on any platform (Kindle, Wattpad, even libraries have previews). Read the first few chapters and see if Death's voice appeals to you and if you can handle that slow pace. It's a book that either grabs you early on or falls flat. It's not one of those that "gets better later" - what comes next is more of the same, just with different layers.

The book is good but pretty emotionally heavy, it's not light reading - if you like stories with depth even if they're sad it's totally worth it, but if you want something quicker and lighter maybe it's not the right time for it now.

I picked it up a while back, and it really grabs you from the first page 🔖 The way it's written is super engaging, even with that darker tone others have already mentioned. If you don't have much time to spare, it's worth knowing that it's not one of those books you can breeze through - it needs your attention because there are details that are totally worth it.

But honestly, it really depends on what you're looking for. If you're after something to read before bed or between appointments, this might not be the best choice. Now, if you can dedicate time to a story that marks you, that gets under your skin and that you'll still remember months later - then yeah, it's definitely worth it. The book leaves something inside you, you know? It's not one of those you read and forget the next day.

I started reading it but stopped halfway through because I just couldn't keep up with the pace of sadness - like, it's not that the book is bad, but it's like each page demands a pause to digest. My brain was like "I need air" (laughs). If you don't have much time, I'd say only prioritize it if you're really into dense, heavy stories, because it's not one of those you can breeze through to kill time - it demands your full attention. But if you like diving into something emotional even if it's exhausting, then yeah it's worth finishing (something I still need to do, by the way).
