How can I help my son make friends at school?

My 6-year-old son started first grade recently and he spends recess alone or stuck to me when I pick him up. The other kids run around and play together, but he just stays watching from a distance. I'm not sure if it's normal shyness or if I should step in somehow. What can I do to help him feel more comfortable socializing?
